Jason has been taking Karate now for about 4 months. He went to a week-long summer camp this summer and liked it. He went from a white belt to yellow this summer. Today we went for a belt promotion ceremony for his karate class.

This is Mr. Mike the instructor and Jason's class. There are kids with different belts in his class. Many of the students are younger and smaller than he is or they have been taking karate since they were 3 yrs. old.

They went through all the moves and demonstrated them to the parents. They are doing front kicks in this picture.

Mr. Mike use to call Jason 'Bonecrusher' but now he calls him 'Big J'. He said Jason is one of the biggest kid in the class and has great control. He said he often has Jason grapple (wrestle) with smaller kids and tells Jason to take it easy on them. He said Jason always has control and never hurts the smaller kids. Jason told me afterwards that when he grapples with the little guys he always lets them get on top of him and
try to "pin" him for a little bit and then he puts them on the bottom.

He doesn't look super excited but he was. This is great positive reinforcment to help keep him motivated and progressing.
The focus of this program is to keep working to improve yourself. They work on self confidence and self control and there is no competition against others. You really just compete with yourself. They will be having a tournament on Jan. 31st and Jason will be grabbling, taking kids down, and sword fighting. We are looking forward to watching him do his best.
Yeah! Jason!
